Democratic presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren criticised the National Rifle Association (NRA)'s continued political influence as "corruption" at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines on Saturday.

Her comments come after a mass shooting in an El Paso Walmart which killed 22 people and raised the issue of gun control in the US.

"Today in America huge majorities want to see us ban assault weapons, do background checks across this country," Warren said.

"So the question everyone should be asking is 'Why doesn't it happen? and the answer: it's corruption. It's the gun industry that controls congress."

The Iowa state fair is considered a litmus test for candidates ahead of the Iowa state caucuses in February, the first nominating process in the Democratic Party primaries ahead of the 2020 presidential elections.
